Misophonic Minds: Another Corner of Barnsley Counter Culture

WebImage

Of National Importance Records is off on a sabbatical. But ONI17 is here and it’s great, honestly…

Misophonic Minds‘ is a compilation of music from artists either based or originating from Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The nineteen tracks are available as a digital download for just £3 – at least 15 of these you will not have heard before and will not find anywhere else. Once them terrorising thugs at Paypal have had their minimal cut , all of that money will be donated to Willow Foundation; a charity that organises very nice things for young people who are very unwell. You can find the compilation available to download or stream here.

Included are the first ever tracks released by Tender FirsFilm and Peter Dand; brand new and unheard recordings from Aztec DollMcCarthy VigilCharlie Northrama zuLyndon Scarfe and Liam Stewart; Exclusive premiers of tracks from forthcoming releases by Garforth & MyersExplorers Society and Del Scott Miller; an alternate mix of a track from The Black Lamps debut record; a likely last ever recording from The Exhibition and more from BrujaHeavy SunsRichard Kitson and Sarah-Jane. There’s also something special from Diskettes Fore Minor to close things off and maybe even some more to come. Downloading the compilation will also provide you with a very cool digital booklet – a first for us – that contains links and information on all the artists involved. The booklet is the very skilful work of Jamie Briggs and uses a fine illustration by Hattie Lockwood.

For more on the bands involved; see here, read the booklet or click a song title on the Bandcamp page.

Elsewhere, we don’t have too much physical stuff left in the ONIR shop but we do have the last few copies of Pareidolia and Carry to the End at a reduced price along with The Black Lamps album and  T-shirts & hats. The download store is full of free stuff including a few things that have been added on the hush over the last year.

On the price: Bandcamp does allow you the opportunity to donate a little more than £3 for the pleasure of downloading the compilation, if you so wish, but we really are not asking it of you. We know lots of people are a little short for a luxury of this kind and if plenty of people gave the £3 and, almost as importantly, found some new music that they enjoyed then that would make lots of people happy. If you really don’t want any of your money going to them rotters at Paypal, then just donate directly to Willow Foundation, let us know and we’ll send you a download code.

Thanks to everyone for everything.

Long Division presents King Street Krawl | 14.09.14

KingStreetKrawlPosterCorrectedA little something we’ve organised with our friends at Clue Records, Philophobia Music and Sticky Shoes. Taking place on the Sunday of Long Division festival, King Street Krawl will feature 16 bands performing between The Inns of Court and Players Bar, both located on King Street of Wakefield. The event will be absolutely free and will end before 9pm giving you plenty of time for the last train home.

Performing Live will be: Bad Grammer, Beesley, Bi:Lingual, The Black Lamps, Bruja, Buen Chico, Clandestines, Colour Me Wednesday, The Do’s, Esper Scout, The Exhibition, Humans as Ornaments, Hysterical Injury, Inlaze., McCarthy Vigil and Runaround Kids

If you’re around for the Saturday of Long Division – which of course you should be since the bleeding Wedding Present AND Post War Glamour Girls are both playing – then Barnsley’s fine and humble music scene will also be represented by Aztec Doll on the Unity Hall Minor Stage  and Gilmore and Roberts at Westgate Chapel. Fancy that.

Sample King Street Krawl audibly below:

Aztec Doll | Bowdlerize | ONI13 | Free Download

AztecPress

Only in the olden days did music get released on a Monday morning. Today is not the olden days but it is a Tuesday and the day that Aztec Doll release the 3 track EP Bowdlerize as a free download. Bowdlerize is the follow up to 2013’s Endlessly and was again recorded with Alan Smyth of 2fly Studios in Sheffield. The EP marks the first material the band have recorded with new member Hayley Youell providing synth and vocals. Listen and download from the Bandcamp link below:

Aztec Doll have had an amazing year already with appearances at Newfound Festival, Live in Barnsley and a slot supporting Post War Glamour Girls amongst the highlights. There are still chances to catch them at this year’s Long Division, Oakwell Music Festival and Clarence Park Festivals and  you should probably keep your eyes on their Facebook for more.

Finally here’s how the ever knowledgeable Alternative Barnsley have described the experience of hearing the above songs:

““They have created an EP that satisfies everything I loved about their first EP, yet they have developed their sound so that they manage to surprise me at every single turn. Aztec Doll have subtly evolved, being now less alt-rock and more ethereal and gothic dream-pop. It’s a smart move, and now they stand even further out in that field of their own.”

Other words for Aztec Doll:

‘Endlessly’ finds singer Roxanna Mitchell by turn delicately haunting and scathingly sharp as she assets her dominance over an insistent and atmospheric guitar line. As much Skeletal Family or Ghost Dance as Siouxsie or The Cure, Aztec Doll have definitely got the goth-tinged post-punk sound nailed.” 9/10 Whisperinandhollerin

“A band that are making some waves on the local scene. Fronted by Roxanna Mitchell, the band play this kind of retro post-punk, crashy guitars, subtle synths, Siouxsie and the Banshees play Soft Cell, sort of thing, and trust me, that’s got to be something good.” Backseat Mafia

“Lyrical lonerism at its finest” 8/10 There Goes The Fear

“Full of dark nihilism and motorik magic, Electrelane-like jagged guitars, ringing electronics.” Sounds XP

IMOKODEBUT

Our compilation EP Pareidolia is officially released today. Rejoice! Though you may have already acquired yourself a copy from somewhere special, if you haven’t and would very much like to, there are links to do so below.

The limited edition CD is available from Bandcamp, Debut Records and Norman Records. By the end of the week it’ll also be in a select few other independents up and down the country. The following are links to UK sites where you can buy the digital version of Pareidolia but in most cases, if you live elsewhere, you’ll find the release available in your region too with a quick search.

itunes | Amazon | Bandcamp | 7digital | Nokia Music | Google Play

There are many many more digital retailers providing the tracks than we’ve room to list here – including streaming services like Spotify and Wimp Music – so again just check your favourite or get in touch.

We also have T-shirts available from today. They’re very limited and you’ll only find those in our own store by clicking here. Each shirt comes with a digital copy of all six tracks included in the price. Thank you Liam!

We had our Barnsley launch event this Saturday and what a lovely day it was. There are a few pictures of the very hot and tight conditions from inside Debut Records on their Facebook page. Thank you very much to all the bands, Stu for letting us takeover his shop, the members of Toba Caldera who ran the sound and venue at Rebeccas, the local press that helped to promote it, Rebecca Bracha for the top photo and of course everyone who came down to either venue. And there’s still the Sheffield leg to come on the 24th…

Finally, here’s the video for Imoko Set’s Crying in the Temple. Enjoy

Pareidolia | Pre-Order | Stream | Launch Parties

PareidoliaPreview2

Our compilation EP Pareidolia (ONI08) will finally be released on the 15th of July after over a year in the making. The 6-track release features Barnsley-based artists new and old to our label, who each contribute a track that you either won’t have heard before or one that has been newly mastered by Jason Sanderson. You can pre-order by clicking here or listen to a full stream of the complete thing below.

There are a range of options for the pre-order. The CD edition is limited to just 200 copies and comes in a hand-stamped and hand-numbered recycled card sleeve with an insert, complete with quote from Brian Cox’s spiritual father Carl Sagan. Many many thanks to the multi-talented Jamie Briggs from Imoko Set who designed the beautiful packaging and who I’m sure is available for other work. The digital version of Pareidolia will be available from Spotify, itunes, emusic and the rest from the 15th but our store is the place you’ll find the cheapest permanent downlands in whatever quality and format you’d like. We’ll also be adding some extremely limited Pareidolia t-shirts to the pre-order in the next few days so hold out if you like your music in a format you can wear.

There will be two launch nights near the release date in both Barnsley and Sheffield. First in Barnsley we have all six bands playing live on 13th of July, split between the venues Rebeccas and the newly opened Debut Records. There’s a Facebook event for that here which we’ll hopefully update with the specifics tomorrow. The Sheffield leg will be taking place at Redhouse on Solly Street on the 24th; Facebook event here.

More thanks to all the bands and people involved who are not mentioned above, including Steve Ellis, Alan Smyth and Ben Davey – who were all involved in recording the tracks – and the very kind Liam Stewart who is responsible for the aforementioned and highly anticipated t-shirts. Please have a listen to what else the bands have to offer below:
